In the mountains around Reggio Emilia, the project develops the theme of living in the landscape by distributing domestic spaces in relation to the orography of the terrain and the views of the valleys. On a family plot of land on the edge of the village and close to his parents’ house, the client wants to build a small single-family house for himself and his partner with adequate space for a family unit that may grow in future. Based on these conditions, the architecture’s form derives from the dialectic between the organisation of the interior space in relation to the exterior, the connection between the elevations and the views of the landscape. On a steep terrain, the architecture acts as a connecting element between two different levels, the upper one where the sleeping area is arranged and the lower one where the living area is concentrated. The pedestrian entrance from above becomes an observatory over the landscape to be viewed beyond the staircase, while the double-height living room space opens onto a wooden deck that levels the slope of the hill. On one side, the terrace of the master bedroom descends slightly, taking advantage of the reduced height of the garages, leaving the floor level just below the parapet limit and the space directly projected onto the landscape. On the other side, the balconies of two bedrooms pierce the rotated volume projecting towards the valley. Beneath this plastic element detached from the central volume is the covered space for summer dining in front of the kitchen, which is also the intermediate space crossed by the open-air walkway. In the middle, the living room is laid out between the wall of the fireplace and the wall of the descending staircase. The white volumes of the architecture are emptied and perforated, opening up inclined connecting planes with wood panelling. The white sheet metal roofs also extend the monochromatic continuity of the architecture onto the oblique planes connecting the various sections of the structure.
