The strategy for transforming Parma’s most important and most degraded industrial area into an Eco District identified the strengths and weaknesses of the existing situation and questioned how to improve the current structure by setting up a growth model that promotes environmental and social sustainability as a future approach in order to reconnect a currently isolated area to the city, improving services for businesses and workers, and implementing real and perceived security. The regeneration of the SPIP area can be developed around a number of central themes to be integrated in the project: the identification of the historical centurial matrix through which the new characterising planting of poplars can be defined; the identification of the park on the Canal as an axis of green penetration in the area along which soft mobility can be developed as a daily link to the city, Paradigna Abbey and Colorno; the redevelopment of the central road axis of Via Forlanini, which can become a linear park crossed by soft mobility and communication for businesses; a collective mobility initiative that promotes the construction of a stop on the Parma-Brescia railway integrated with bicycle parking and a bike sharing point to then introduce an organic system of cycle-pedestrian routes; the implementation of common services for businesses and employees such as social vegetable gardens, a kindergarten, a conference centre, an area for events, and areas equipped for hauliers; the transformation of the abandoned car park – currently a symbol of the area’s degradation – into a co-working space serving businesses; the identification of the two main entrance gateways and some secondary ones, which, as well as an opportunity to promote the area, can become access control points; the signposting of the Eco District on national travel routes such as High Speed and Motorway.
